As our first grading period comes to and end, the fifth grade is working to tie up loose ends. It is hard to believe that 1/4 of our school year is already over.
In science class, we have been working on the movement of the sun and the stars. We will be learning how the movement of the sun affects shadows on Earth. We will also be learning about the different constellations in the sky. This will be our path into our unit on the solar system.
In social studies, we continue to work on early explorers. We have read about how Columbus discovered the new world. We have discussed the positive and negative effects of this discovery. We have also learned about other early explorers and their contributions to our world.
On Friday, October 12, we are looking forward to celebrating Grandparents' Day at St. James. We will be gathering together for Mass and a short celebration in Madden Hall. This is always a fun-filled event.
We would like to wish everyone a happy fall season!

The fifth grade at St. James School is happy to be back. After a fun-filled summer, we have quickly worked our way back into a school routine. Over the past few weeks, we have been working very hard.
In math class, we have been working with exponents and place value. We have learned how to write numbers in expanded form using exponents and about place value of whole numbers and decimals. We will soon be working with adding and subtracting decimals.
In social studies, we first focused on geography of the United States. We have also reviewed and tested over the continents and main oceans. Then, we read how early people came to the Americas. We also have read about some of the early Native Americans and civilizations living the North and South America.
In reading, we have completed the novel The Whipping Boy. We really enjoyed the book and had a great time reading it. Over the next week, we will be working on a castle project that depicts the story elements of the story.
It has been a great start to our fifth-grade year, and we look forward to an exciting and fun-filled year.
